With the threat of automation looming large over many industries, art is often outlined as an area relatively immune to this issue. Aside from art’s associations with individual imagination and labor, most of us would find it difficult placing value in artworks created by algorithms because artistic expression is so intrinsically linked to human experience.
Yet if the singularity were to occur and artificial intelligence was able to offer artworks of unimaginable beauty and insight, would we still view art as something innately human? Would we still want artists to interpret the innovative ideas and aesthetics offered by AI or accept our digital counterparts as equals in art making? Would man and machine move forward together or would we segregate AI Art as other. Google’s DeepDream project was an interesting experiment in this direction but until artificial intelligence can operate completely independent of our influence, we will have to keep wondering whether the future of art rests in man or machine.
